New Content in Archive of Wisconsin Newspapers

Thursday, August 11, 2016

Approximately 85,000 pages of pre-2005 newspapers from 12 communities around the state have been added to Archive of Wisconsin Newspapers.

The newspaper digitization was made possible through Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds awarded to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) as well as funding provided by the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium (WPLC). WPLC worked with the Wisconsin Historical Society, WiLS, a non-profit membership organization serving libraries and cultural organizations across Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) to scan, upload, and host the content on Archive of Wisconsin Newspapers.

Wisconsin residents now have access the following historical newspapers from Archive of Wisconsin Newspapers:

  • Baraboo Republic (Baraboo) 12/16/1858-4/21/1886

  • Brodhead Independent (Brodhead) 2/27/1861-8/30/1900

  • Hartland News / Hartland News and Dairyman (Hartland) 9/22/1894-12/25/1920

Wisconsin Historical Society Family History Records Available in BadgerLink

Thursday, August 11, 2016

For the last four decades the Library-Archives Division of the Wisconsin Historical Society has been working on collecting, processing, and scanning records from across Wisconsin. These records are the product of a collaborative partnership with FamilySearch, Ancestry, the state court system, and other institutions.

“Having access to [these] records online is very critical and important to family history research,” said Matt Blessing, Administrator for the Division of Library, Archives and Museum Collections for the Wisconsin Historical Society. Having digitized, searchable, online records allows amateur and professional researchers and genealogists to have easy access to primary sources that decode the past.

The Family History Records put together by WHS includes:

  • Wisconsin, State Censuses, 1895 and 1905
  • Wisconsin, Birth Index, 1820-1907
  • Wisconsin, Deaths, 1820-1907
  • Wisconsin, Marriage Index, 1820-1907
  • Wisconsin, Wills and Probate Records, 1800-1987

The collection is hosted by Ancestry and access to the Wisconsin specific records is available to Wisconsin residents through BadgerLink, Wisconsin’s Online Library. To access the records, Wisconsin residents may need to log in to BadgerLink using a Wisconsin public library card.

“BadgerLink’s purpose is to provide quality online resources to Wisconsin residents, and the partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society, providing access to this Wisconsin-centric collection is a great opportunity for both organizations to further our goals and provide Wisconsin residents with great online resources.” said Martha Berninger, director of Resources for Libraries and Lifelong Learning.

On Thursday September 29th at 10am, participate in a free Genealogy Class to learn how to use Wisconsin Historical Society Family History Records, and stay tuned for additional training materials from the Wisconsin Historical Society and BadgerLink.

Changes to EBSCO’s Whitelist for Firewalls & Proxy Servers Coming in July

Thursday, June 23, 2016

If your organization restricts system access to particular IP addresses - also known as “whitelisting,” read on for information about changes coming from EBSCO and how you may be affected.

BadgerLink, Wisconsin’s Online Library, subscribes to many EBSCO databases ( which your patrons, students, and staff may be using for research. In an effort to provide the best possible response times to these subscriptions and services, in July 2016, EBSCO is making adjustments to their technical infrastructure. To accomplish this, the services will be delivered from a much larger range of IP addresses and they will no longer be able to provide a list of the IP addresses used by their servers.

Organizations who utilize whitelists will need to change their configurations to utilize domain names instead. An updated list of domains is available here: This page is also included in the BadgerLink Set-Up Guide.

Contact BadgerLink at if you have any questions.
